Clamshell mode is running a MacBook with the lid shut, driving an external display, keyboard and mouse. Apple calls it closed-display operation, supports it officially, and documents it badly enough that a decade of forum myths have filled the gap.

What clamshell mode is
With the lid shut, macOS turns off the built-in display and routes everything to an external one. The Mac stays awake. It is a first-class supported mode, not a hack — Apple has a support document for it and has shipped the behaviour since the PowerBook era.
What confuses people is that the lid closing normally means sleep. Clamshell mode is macOS deciding that the conditions for staying awake are met and overriding that default. When those conditions are not met, you get sleep instead, with no explanation. Almost every clamshell problem is really a condition-not-met problem.
What you need
The requirements differ by chip, and this is the single biggest source of outdated advice online:
- An external display, connected and awake.
- An external keyboard and mouse or trackpad. Bluetooth counts, provided it is paired and connected.
- Mains power — on Intel Macs only. Apple Silicon MacBooks run closed-display on battery quite happily. If you read that clamshell "requires" power, that advice predates 2020.
Setting it up
- Connect the external display and wait for it to show the desktop.
- Connect the keyboard and pointing device, or confirm Bluetooth ones are connected.
- Plug in power if the Mac is Intel.
- Close the lid. The external display flickers and takes over.
If the Mac sleeps instead, wake it with a key press on the external keyboard. On a Bluetooth keyboard you may need to enable "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" in Bluetooth settings.
Menu bar and window positions
Closing the lid changes the display arrangement, and macOS moves windows from the built-in screen onto the external one. It is not always graceful. Windows that were positioned relative to the laptop display can land partly off-screen, and apps with no Dock icon can end up unreachable entirely. If a window vanishes, Window → Zoom usually drags it back into view.
The battery question
Running plugged in constantly is fine on any modern MacBook. Since macOS 11, Optimised Battery Charging holds the charge at around 80% when it detects a long stationary period, specifically to reduce the calendar ageing that comes from sitting at 100% and warm. macOS 13 added the explicit 80% limit for the 2022 MacBook Pro and later.
What genuinely shortens lithium battery life is time spent at a high state of charge at a high temperature. Clamshell raises the second factor a little. Optimised Battery Charging addresses the first. In practice, permanently docked Macs do lose battery health faster than ones that cycle — but the difference plays out over years, not months, and the machine remains entirely usable throughout.
The heat question
This one is real, just usually overstated. The aluminium body is part of the cooling system, and a closed lid reduces the surface area radiating heat. Expect a few degrees warmer under sustained load than the same work with the lid open.
It matters if you compile, render or transcode for hours at a time on a fanless MacBook Air, where the only thermal path is the case itself. It matters much less on a MacBook Pro with fans. A laptop stand that leaves air around the case removes most of the difference; a closed case pressed flat against a desk is the worst arrangement.
When it will not work
The Mac sleeps as soon as the lid shuts
A condition is not met. In order of likelihood: the external display is asleep rather than awake, the Mac is Intel and on battery, or the Bluetooth keyboard has disconnected. Wake the external display first, then close the lid.
It wakes up again by itself
Something is sending a wake event — often a USB device, sometimes Wake for Network Access. Check pmset -g in Terminal, and look at the womp value; 1 means network wake is on.
The external display is blurry
Not a clamshell problem. That is scaling on a non-Retina display, and it looks identical with the lid open.
You want the Mac awake with the lid closed and no external display
